Introducing Synchronize!
Synchronize! automatically keeps the documents on two or more Macs up to date, by copying the newest version of those documents to the other Mac. It makes sure your desktop Mac and your PowerBook, or your Mac at home, have the most recent versions of your documents.
Using Synchronize!, all you do is select two folders on your desktop. Synchronize! identifies documents which correspond between the two folders and copies the newest document to the other folder.
Use a floppy disk to carry your files from one Mac to another, or use File Sharing and a network connection, or AppleTalk Remote. Synchronize! makes sure that the newest versions of your documents are in both folders, no matter where you changed them last!
Synchronize! identifies corresponding folders, nested to any level, then matches the files within each corresponding folder, looking for files which have the same name, but different dates.
Features
Ñ╩Copies bi-directionally (for file reconciliation) or in one direction only (for a quick backup, or file distribution to other sites). Creates an exact duplicate of a folder or a hard disk by copying only changed files.
Ñ Optionally mirrors a hard disk or a folder to another disk. Makes a quick backup by copying only files which have changed to your backup disk.
Ñ╩Resolves aliases, so that folders and files located in different parts of your hard disk can be synchronized without moving them.
Ñ╩Copies files to and from any disk which appears on the desktop. Works with AppleShare and File Sharing for network synchronization, and AppleTalk Remote for synchronization via modem.
Ñ Automatically mounts server disks, over a network or with a modem, under System 7.
Ñ╩Automatically opens synchronization documents. When you open Synchronize!, the documents you select will be opened for you, automatically.
Ñ╩Synchronizes any number of files and folders, limited only by available memory.
Options
Each document can be customized in its operation with the following options:
Ñ Show the files to be copied or deleted, as well as the folders to be created or deleted, as a list. Allow the opportunity to remove some files or folders from the list if they shouldn╒t be copied or deleted.
Ñ Move files. Use the extensive file description facility to move a subset of files to another folder, such as all files modified before January 1, 1991.
Ñ Copy only certain files. Designate files to be copied by full or partial file name, date modified, file type, creator and label.
Ñ Exclude some files. Designate files to be excluded from the set of files to be copied. Exclude files with the same criteria you use to copy only certain files.
Ñ Synchronize at startup or before Quit or Shut Down. Synchronize your files before you start and after you're done, so that changes you make are copied to your other Mac. Synchronize! automatically asks for your floppy disk (or connects to a server) and copies your files before shutting down.
Ñ Close the document, Quit, or Shut Down when copying is complete. Run Synchronize! as the last thing you do. Let it shut down your Mac when it╒s done copying.
Ñ Eject disks when copying is complete.
Ñ Verify files. Verify that floppy disks have been correctly written by reading the information back and comparing.
Ñ Copy AutoDoubler files in their compressed form. Copy files compressed by AutoDoubler in their compressed form, saving time and space, even to floppy disks!
It╒s easy to set up:
1. Select the folders. Click on each folder icon to select the folders whose files are to be synchronized.
2. Click the Start╔ button. You see a list of the files to be copied.
3. Start synchronization. Copying is done in the background, while you work.
4. Save the document for next time!
Try it out!
If you'd like to try Synchronize!, a demonstration version is available on AppleLink and CompuServe. The demonstration version is limited to copying files between folders which contain no more than 200K. On AppleLink, the path is Third Parties: Qdea. On CompuServe, look for SYNCH.SEA in the Misc.
